I believe The Presidio was established before the Mission, but both founded in 1776. Mexico did not take over these parts until Mexican independence in 1821. The Mexicans held "alta" California for only a couple of decades, when it became a US territory at the end of the Mexican-American war (settled by the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in the 1840s. I too recommend the Kamiya book.
